Installing Apache, SVN and Trac off by heart.

I've been reading a few blog postings and forum pages about how people are finding it difficult to install Trac and Subversion on Windows. Well having moved over to a new Job at a New Company, I was tasked with installing it on one of their machines. Well I didn't want to look an idiot and install it straight on a machine and make it come tumbling down, having been a while since I installed it.

Where is......What is......How Do You......

What is your normal response to these types of questions? I bet it's stop what your doing, find this information give it to the person asking and then take another 30-60 minutes trying to get back in the zone or you just bite their head off as you have only just got into the zone.

Well what it should be is "It's on the wiki". What you don't have a wiki????? If your using SVN and Trac then you do :)

If the response back is I've checked and it's not there, one of three things just happened:

  1. They are lieing and haven't checked the wiki
  2. They are bloody blind and can't see it for looking
  3. You haven't put it up there, Shame on you that'll learn ya
To this end I suggest if you haven't got a Wiki go get one now!!! And if you have ensure all the information you can is up there and is always kept up to date, even a weekly 30 min tour through your wiki will help, 1) You may see things you never knew about 2) Your spot out of date / changed information 3) It can be a nice relaxing break from coding.

Yeah Yeah, you document it all and its in nicely formatted documents on a share drive, remember we are developers and we want everything now, and those documents are just "Write Only"

Ok Finished Reading the Book

So today I finished reading Joel on Software.

But I've decided that I've covered enough of the book for people to get a taste. As you could properly tell from my past postings this book is really worth the money.

The final few parts are more about .Net that has given me some thoughts. I suggest you go get it now :-)

I'm now starting his second book on UI Design for Programmers and I'll just give one review for this one but so far it looks good :-)
