Carrying on from yesterdays post it then got me thinking, what servers do people use / purchase out there. My preference is HP’s but of course all manufacturers all have their pro’s and con’s.So what do you company buy? HP, IBM, DELL, MAC or Self Built?

And why that make? Cost, Support, Reliability, Data Centre Requirements?

Currently here we have a lot of old IBM’s but they are slowly being replaced by HP due to Costs, Support and reliability as well as I know how to open one up and work with it.

We use HP Proliants. My company has a global agreement with HP and have standardized on them, but even if I were completely free to choose and assuming the cost was not prohibitive, I would still stick with them. They’re extremely reliable and easy to work with. And their management tools and support from third party systems is top notch.

And since we’re now consolidating on VMWare ESX, their excellent ESX integration and support is key.

In the past, I had been using Compaq, and then after the takeover HP.

Moving job saw a switch to Dell, and since starting my own company I’ve stuck with Dell… more out of habit than anything else.

Our latest purchases from Dell though have been nothing but one cock up after another, and it’s seriously denting their credibility with us.
